Are these layered red white and blue cupcakes colorful inside?

Yes they are! I’ll be showing you how to make the different color layers for your cupcakes so that they’ll be fun and festive all the way through to the middle! It might be hard to tell at first but you’ll see in the photos below that these cupcakes have different color layers all in one.

Each cupcake will be slightly different as you put each layer in by hand but the just makes them more exciting to share.

Will my layered cupcakes be vibrant and pretty?

The cupcakes come out looking great as you can see! By using the gel food coloring and staring with a white cake mix we’re able to keep the colors really vibrant.

If you are worried about the colors not coming out properly you can always make a test cupcake in a mini pan to see how they will look. The most important thing here is to start with a white cake mix and use the gel food coloring as it is designed to hold color really well when baking.

I can’t decorate cakes to save my life, will my cupcakes look okay?

You don’t have to be an experienced cake decorator to get your cupcakes to come out looking super adorable. It’s really easy to make simple decorations on top of your cupcakes.

As you can see below we kept things really simple. If you have little ones who like to help in the kitchen you’ll have so much fun together letting them work on decorating these cupcakes.

They can add the colored sugars, sprinkles, or you can even smooth out the icing and let them dunk the tops in bowls of festive jimmies.

Baking essentials for the kitchen:

If you are trying to pick out some of the best supplies to stock your kitchen for cake mix recipes and baking in general, these are some of our favorites and must have items.

I like half sheet baking pans that are quality (hello no noisy pops or sloshed cookie dough from twisting), I line my cookie sheets with silicone baking mats. These are a must when doing cake mix recipes which can settle and become thin at lot easier than traditional cookie dough.

Of course mixing bowls, a mixer, spatula, and some whisks should be on your list if you don’t have ones that you love. I also like to have a set of cooling racks so that my recipes can properly cool before they’re scarfed down by my family!

For this recipe you can use cupcake pans with liners or you can use the aluminum disposable ones with liners as well!

What do I need to make layered red white and blue cupcakes?

To make these layered red white and blue cupcakes you’ll need some simple ingredients. Honestly, it’s just as easy as all the other recipes you’ll find here! Once I show you the easy steps for layering the fun colors you’ll never want to make regular old cupcakes again.

To make these patriotic cupcakes grab some vegetable oil and eggs (for preparing your white cake mix), white frosting, red and blue gel food coloring, sprinkles (like the ones I linked above) and a piping bag with simple decorating tips!

If you are looking for decorating bags you can grab them here or at Walmart. They make disposable ones so you don’t even have to worry about cleanup!
