Caramel cools quickly. If it starts to firm up, simply microwave it for a few seconds and stir. Spraying your spoon or silicone spreader with cooking spray also helps it glide smoothly over the cookies.

Ingredient Notes to Make Twix Cookies

  • Vanilla Cake Mix: The cake mix is your shortcut base, giving the cookies a soft, tender texture with perfectly balanced sweetness. It already contains flour, sugar, leavening, and flavoring, so you get consistent results every time without measuring a dozen ingredients.
  • Caramels: The creamy caramels create the signature Twix layer: sweet, chewy, and buttery. Melting them gives you a smooth, spreadable caramel that mimics the candy bar without needing to make caramel from scratch (though homemade works beautifully too).
  • Chocolate (chips or melting wafers): Melted chocolate forms the final “Twix” layer. Whether you use milk chocolate chips or dark chocolate, it adds a crisp, glossy finish that contrasts perfectly with the soft cookie and gooey caramel. A touch of coconut oil helps the chocolate melt smoothly and set with a clean snap.

Variations and Substitutions for Cookie Dough

Caramel and milk chocolate are a favorite but you can change up the flavors if you like.

  • Cake Mix Options: Yellow, white, or chocolate cake mix all work beautifully.
  • Buttery Shortbread Cookies Style Base: Swap the oil for melted butter for a richer, more classic Twix cookie texture.
  • Caramel: Use caramel bits for caramel onto each cookie.
  • Extra Twix Flavor: Add chopped Twix bars on top of the caramel layer.
  • Flavor Boost: A splash of vanilla extract deepens the cookie flavor.
  • Add‑Ins: Mini chocolate chips, crushed nuts (pecans or walnuts), or a sprinkle of flaky salt. Even chopped twix candy bars.

Special Equipment Needed for Twix Bar

  • Cookie Scoop: Use a cookie scoop to make even, uniform cookies.
  • Baking Mat: Skip the aluminum foil or parchment paper by placing your cookies on a reusable baking mat for the cookie sheet.

Tips for Making Twix Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

These twix bar cookies come out great every time but here are some tips to make them even better.

  • Don’t Overmix the Dough: Overmixing makes cake‑mix cookies tough. Stir just until everything comes together for the softest texture.
  • Spray Your Spreader: A quick mist of cooking spray on your spoon or silicone spatula keeps the caramel from sticking and helps it glide smoothly.
  • Cool Cookies Completely: If the cookies are even slightly warm, the caramel will melt and slide off. Let them cool fully before topping.
  • Add a Pinch of Salt: A sprinkle of flaky salt on top balances the sweetness and gives the cookies a gourmet finish.
  • Smooth, Shiny Chocolate: Melt chocolate with a tiny bit of coconut oil for a silky texture that sets beautifully.
  • Work in Small Batches: If the caramel starts to firm up, rewarm it for a few seconds in the microwave and continue topping.
  • Make a Platter with: Double Chocolate Cookies, Snicker Cookies and Cheesecake cookies.
