Do I need any special tools to make these cupcakes?!

We will be using a Wilton #70 decorating tip which you can get here or at most baking supply places. It’s a leaf decorating tip that is very multipurpose in the decorating world.

You can also make use of some reusable icing bags or you can get disposable ones. In either case you’ll be all set. All you really need is the leaf decorating tip in order to make this design very easy in terms of decorating to perfection.

Can I make leaf designs without a pastry bag or icing tips?

If you really don’t want to be bothered with a leaf design tip you can definitely find ways around that. If you want to put in a little more time and do some practicing here is a video tutorial on how to make leaf designs without a pastry tip!

Another great idea is to tape the corner of your plastic bag and then cut it on a diagonal in order to create a substitute tip that you can then use to design leaves on your Oreo sunflower cupcakes.

If you have the time and don’t mind practicing a bit you can definitely get away without using a pastry tip. For me, the few bucks I’ll spend on the tip at the baking supply place is worth it because I will use it for other recipes. You do what works for you!

Kitchen Essentials For Cupcake Recipes:

If you are trying to pick out some of the best supplies to stock your kitchen for cake mix recipes and baking in general, these are some of our favorites and must have items.

I like these cupcake pans that are quality (hello no noisy pops or sloshed batter from twisting), I line my cupcakes with silicone baking cups. These are a must when doing cake mix recipes which can settle, you can also use parchment cups for a different finished look!

Of course mixing bowls, a mixer, spatula, and some whisks should be on your list if you don’t have ones that you love. I also like to have a set of cooling racks so that my recipes can properly cool before they’re scarfed down by my family!

For cupcakes you’ll always need cupcake pans, cupcake liners, and a mixer makes life so much easier!

Bake cupcakes per recipe on box and cool completely. It is important that they are cooled completely because if the icing melts as you are piping it onto the top surface it will all eventually slide off and create a gooey mess!
