Ingredient Notes

  • Red, yellow, blue and green food coloring: To create the characters’ unique colors.
  • White frosting: You’ll use the food coloring to create different colors from the white icing.
  • Deco eyes: Cute little edible eyes work best.
  • Orange jelly beans: To create Elmo’s nose.
  • Candy corn: Create Big Bird’s beak with these.
  • Mini chocolate chip cookies: For the Cookie Monster of course.

How to Make Sesame Street Cupcakes

These are the basic steps for making Sesame Street Cupcakes. Please refer to the recipe card below for more detailed instructions.

STEP 1: Bake

Bake cupcakes following the directions on the box, cool completely.

STEP 2: Cookie Monster

Use black gel icing to draw on mouth. Use tip 233 to pipe blue fur on remainder of cupcake from the mouth outward as shown. Attach eyes and place mini chocolate chip cookie in mouth.

STEP 3: Elmo

Use black gel icing to draw on mouth, just like we did for Cookie Monster. Use tip 233 to pipe red fur on remainder of cupcake from the mouth out as shown. Attach eyes and place an orange jelly bean for the nose

STEP 4: Oscar the Grouch

Use black gel icing to draw on mouth. Use tip 233 to pipe green fur on remainder of cupcake from the mouth out as shown. Attach eyes and use black gel icing to create eyebrows.

STEP 5: Big Bird

Use tip 70 to pipe yellow feathers over entire cupcake – start at the center and work your way out to the edge, repeat process all the way around. Press in 2 candy corn, point up, to form the beak. Attach eyes and a craft feather.

Optional: Use a blue edible marker to create eyelids on deco eyes!
